Smiling girls and rosy boys
Come and buy my little toys
Monkeys made of gingerbread
And sugar horses painted red
Rich men's children running past
Their fathers dressed in hose
Golden hair and mud of many acres on their shoes
Gazing eyes and running wild
Past the stocks and over stiles
Kiss the window merry child
But come and buy my toys
You've watched your father plough the fields with a ram's horn
Sowed it wide with peppercorn and furrowed with a bramble thorn
Reaped it with a sharpened scyth, threashed it with a quill
The miller told your father that he'd work it with the greatest will
Now your watching's over you must play with girls and boys
Leave the parsley on the stalls
Come and buy my toys
You shall own a cambric shirt
You shall work your father's land
But now you shall play in the market square
Till you'll be a man
Smiling girls and rosy boys
Come and buy my little toys
Monkeys made of gingerbread
And sugar horses painted red
Come And Buy My toys - David Bowie (02:07)
David Bowie tune 'Come and buy my toys'. From the original vinyl so please forgive the snap, crackle
and pop!
Bowie is awesome and a legend but this cover sucks.
In an attempt to try to make it distinct the tempo and phrasing of the vocals are all screwed up; the overall production is fussy and insipid.
The original version destroys this.

Bowie just seems obsessed with changing his look so often he comes as more of a style collector than someone actually invested in music. Stones less adventurous, but their work more grounded and convincing because they paused and focused on a genre that really mattered to them. Glam, the Berlin period, MTV pop - just comes off like another fad from a short-attention spanned dilletante.

I can't help but disagree. You could argue that it's good to stick to your roots, but at least you can't call Bowie a one trick pony. A lot of the greatest artists are the ones that adapt over time, and change with the music. Plus, many musicians need change in order to keep themselves interested. You can run out of ideas if you've played rock and blues for long enough. Not trying to knock the Stones or anything, I love both artists, just my opinion.
